Welcome to the
Here, animal suffering is a cost of doing business.
Cages should be left in the Dark Ages, not hidden in Empire’s supply chain.
Executives at Empire and their retail brands, which make up Canada’s
second-largest
retail conglomerate, are
earning millions
while hens in their supply chains suffer.
Demand Better

Nine years ago, Empire—the parent company behind major Canadian grocery brands Sobeys, Longo’s, and others—promised to go 100% cage-free by 2025.
Nearly a decade later, they have failed to share how and when they’ll fulfill their promise.
Tell the grocery brands within the Empire of Greed to invest in Canada’s cage-free future by sharing clear plans for ending their reliance on cages.
Take ActionThe Brands Behind the Suffering
In 2024, Empire raked in a whopping $725.2 million in net earnings, in part from selling products of cruelty under these well-known grocery brands.

Sobeys pledged to go cage-free by 2025 but retracted their deadline. Since 2022, the company has stagnated at about 17% progress and has yet to share a time-bound plan for fully eliminating cages.

Farm Boy, acquired by Empire in 2018, has yet to explicitly commit to going cage-free. Despite launching a brand refresh in 2025, the company has failed to refresh their position on caging birds.

In 2016, Longo’s committed to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs by 2025. In 2024, they reported that 46% of their egg supply was cage-free, but they have yet to publish incremental goals toward fulfilling their commitment.

Nine years ago, Safeway promised to rid their supply chain of cages by 2025. But they have yet to publish any progress or plans toward fulfilling this goal.
Meet the faces behind Empire and their brands’ inaction.

Leaders within the Empire of Greed claim to prioritize integrity and improvement. Yet they keep raking in profits and expanding their grocery realm while hens continue to languish in miserable cages in their operations.
These executives have the power to reduce animal suffering, but they need to hear from you.
Take ActionNo financial gain is worth the price of animal cruelty.
Studies show Canadians overwhelmingly disapprove of cages—and for good reason.
Life in Confinement:
Most hens in the Canadian egg industry live in overcrowded wire cages, each with floor space no larger than a sheet of legal paper.
Degraded Welfare:
Caged birds are so tightly packed they can’t engage in essential behaviours, like running, jumping, or foraging.
Physical and Mental Anguish:
Cages cause painful health problems, such as lesions, bone loss, and liver disease. Without space to move, hens also suffer extreme stress and boredom.
Empire’s grocery brands must incentivize a true cage-free supply to spare millions of hens a life in unbearable confinement.
